Dance

SPIRITUAL/LITURGICAL CLASS (All Ages)

  Spiritual or liturgical dance is a Christian form of worship involving a variety of free form steps taken from ballet, modern, and jazz. Each step encourages the movement of energy and conveys a special message to God, our creator. At our school, we use the praise dance method to teach spiritual/liturgical dance.  

BALLET COMBINATION CLASS (Ages 3 to 6)

  Ballet is an artistic dance form performed to music using precise and highly formalized set of steps and gestures. Known as one of the oldest forms of dance, ballet evolved during he 1600s and has been refined throughout the ages. Though French in its origin, ballet is an Italian word that means to dance. Thus, this form of dance trains and develops the body to move gracefully. At our school, we use the French Method of ballet, which stresses cleanness, fluidity, and elegance. Our ballet combination class combines ballet and tap to give our young students exposure to two very important dance forms.  

BALLET 1/2 (Ages 6 and 12)

Classical Ballet, which was introduced during the renaissance is categorized by beautiful movement of the feet on pointe shoes and the arms gliding with grace.  

JAZZ ( 8 and up)

  Jazz is a form of dance that showcases a dancer’s individual style and originality. Energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps, and quick turns, this form of dance allow each dancer to interpret the movements in their own way. At our school, we use the “Jack Cole” method.  

TAP (6 and up)

  Tap is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. They create rhythmic pattern. At our school, we use the “Broadway style.” This style uses the arms and upper body, blended with feet to create the rhythmic routine. This style helps the dancer develop tenacity, style, and creativity.   

MODERN/Contemporary (Ages 10 and up)

  Modern is a broad genre of western concert or theatrical dance. Relative young, modern dance is said to have emerged out of dancers rejection of, or rebellion against classical ballet or traditional dance styles. The movements in modern dance is very emotional and is the dancer’s interpretation of what they hear and feel as the music plays. At our school, we use the Hawthorne technique which is more modern and contemporary.     

HIP HOP (Ages 4 and up)

  Hip-hop refers to street or freestyle dance moves primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of the hip hop culture. Categorized by bold, energetic, and breaking moves, hip-hop dance is categorized by expressions of intricate movements that exudes fun and high energy. At our school, we use several methods which include breaking, popping, locking, etc.     

AFRICAN

  African dance refers mainly to the high energy, cultural dance movements of Africa. Interwoven in the diverse cultural differences in musical and movement styles, African dance is immersed in and draws from the history and origin of its people. At our school, we use the West African dance form laced with a little South African form.     

SPECIAL NEEDS DANCE PROGRAM

The goal of our Special Needs Dance Program is to develop, strengthen, and encourage the gifts, abilities of our special students.  The program was designed to meet the needs of students with special needs and varying levels and abilities such as autism, down syndrome, and the like.

DANCE COMPANIES

The Van Vicker School of Performing Arts strives to create professional performers that can handle the busy world of auditioning and performing. Thus, in order to ensure that your dancer is well trained and ready for this world, we offer students opportunities to be a part of our reknown dance companies.  Students must audition to get into each company.  Auditions are held annually for the following leveled companies:

Petite: Ages 10 and up or higher skill level

Apprentice: Ages 11 and up or higher skill level

Junior: Ages 12 and up or higher skill level

Elite: Ages 14 and up or higher skill level

Fees, classes, and rehearsal times are provided once students are a part of the company.


Theater

Drama/Acting

 Drama is a literature, a composition in verse or prose intended to portray life or character or tell a story usually involving conflicts and emotions through action and dialogue. Drama is typically designed for theatrical performance or play. Our drama department consist of acting for stage and acting for film. 

Acting 101

 Acting is the art or occupation of performing in plays, movies, television productions. At our school, we use various acting techniques such as Meisner and Uta Hagen. In this course, students will learn about acting for both stage and film. Course prepares students to be comfortable and confident in front of the camera as well as on stage 

Musical Theater

 Musical Theater is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical- humor, pathos, love, anger- are communicated through the words, music, movement, and technical aspects of entertainment as an integrated whole. Our school prides itself in preparing our students for careers in musical theater by combing music, dance, and acting. 

Drama/Thespian Club

 Our Drama/Thespian club provides students an opportunity to gain more performance experiences by participating in periodic auditions and shows. These students take additional classes and are a part of a drama team that meets at least once a week in addition to regular acting courses. Many of the students in this group are headed for a future in either film and theatrical performance. Auditions are held annually. Membership fees are required. Film Production

Film Making Course

 Film is part of a series of moving images as in the making of a movie. Our film production course prepares today’s students for a day in the life of a film maker. In other words, students learn movie making from the Preproduction, Production, and Post-Production stages. Students learn producing, directing, script writing, and EVERYTHING FILM. 

CINEMATOGRAPHY/PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE

 Cinematography is the science or art of motion-picture photography by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either electronically by means of an image sensor, or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as film stock. At our school, we combine cinematography and photography into a fun course that afford our students opportunities to use both movie videography and photography equipment. Our course also introduces the students to hands-on, intensive film training for movies and music videos. 

SCRIPT WRITING

 Script Writing is the art and craft of writing scripts for mass media such as feature films, television productions,, or video games. At our school, students are taught how to write for film and stage. Students go through the stages of writing, learn about various writing programs, and how to take their script from paper to screen. 

Music

MUSIC DEPARTMENT

MUSIC/VOICE

Music is vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotions. Written or printed signs represent vocal or instrumental sound. Our music program trains students in both how to play musical instruments and how to sing. Our instrumental music classes offers students lessons in piano, guitar, violin, and drums.  

PIANO

The piano is a large keyboard musical instrument with a wooden case enclosing a soundboard and strings which are struck by hammers when the keys are pressed. Our piano instruction teaches students both how to read and play musical notes.  

GUITAR

Guitar is a stringed musical instrument with a fretted fingerboard, typically in curved sides, and six or twelve strings, played by plucking or strumming with the fingers or a plectrum.  

VIOLIN

A violin is a stringed instrument of treble pitch, played with a horsehair bow and used to create some of the world’s most beautiful music. 

DRUMS

Drums is a percussion instrument sounded by being struck with sticks or hands, typically cylindrical, barrel-shaped, or bowl shaped with a taut membrane over one or both ends. 

VOICE

Voice Training class teaches students about sounds produced in the larynx, uttered through the mouth. Students start at the very beginning, learning the basic sounds and notes involved in singing. We provide both whole group and private lessons.
