What is Accelerate Learning Program?
Accelerated Learning Program (ALP), consists of three Levels 1, 2, and 3. Level 1 are Grades 1 and 2, Level 2 are Grades 3 and 4, and Level 3 are Grades 5 and 6 respectively. The levels are hard core, learner-driven courses such as Mathematics/Numeric, Science, English, Social Studies and Life Skills. The Teachers must hold C-Certificates and must be trained by the Alternative Education Department of the Ministry Of Education on the Levels and teaching models. Specific books being Teachers Guide and Learners Guide are part of the teaching and learning materials alongside grades 1 through 6 Textbooks. Our program is unique in that we’ve added a performing arts piece as well as a STEM component to give our students optimal learning outcomes.
Our Philosophy
Van Vicker School of Performing Arts ALP Program believes in affording every child a stellar education in both the arts and academics, regardless of socioeconomic status or background. Thus, our program is dedicated to providing superior academic and performing arts services that serve as a catalyst for creating life-long learners in an environment that is nurturing, safe, and conducive to learning.
Our History
Our Performing Arts ALP Program was birthed out of our desire to help Liberia overcome its education deficit due to the aftermath of its 15-year civil war. As such, we started with 30 children, 15 in each level, and 150 presently on the waiting list. Our students, who are mostly wards, have been out of school for a number of years and lag far behind their counter parts who have been in school. Many have never seen the steps of a school but have a burning desire to attend. However, because of budgeting constraints, we do not have the capacity. That being said, it’s incredibly difficult to have to turn so many away. It’s been even more difficult explaining to parents making inquiries, that this is not an ordinary school that you can just join the class, as they must meet certain criteria and the burden is on the teachers, who are doing their very best.
